Why do our teeth hurt?

Content

When one or more teeth hurt, it is usually mainly due to inflammation of the nerve caused by a poorly treated cavity, but there may be other reasons.

Reasons why we have toothaches

  • Deep filling close to the nerve.
  • Cracked tooth.
  • Intense tooth wear on chewing surfaces.
  • Visible roots due to gum disease.
  • A blow to the teeth while playing sports or in other situations.

Symptoms that toothache can cause

  • Severe toothache
  • Toothache that lasts more than 1 or 2 days
  • Abscess or swollen face
  • Fever or ear pain

In these cases, we should make an appointment with our dentist for a diagnosis and to resolve the problem. In extreme cases, such as difficulty breathing or a blow to the teeth outside of regular business hours, we should go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.

Solutions to relieve toothache

  • Make an emergency appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
The dentist is the best person to determine the cause of most toothaches and will prescribe the most effective treatment to relieve the pain. They will also prescribe the most appropriate medication if necessary.
  • Take an anti-inflammatory for toothache
Anti-inflammatory drugs can temporarily relieve pain, until you are seen by a dentist.
  • Avoid stimuli that trigger toothaches
Avoiding cold, heat, and sweets will reduce your pain.
  • Avoid chewing on the side that hurts.
This way we won't have so much pain, nor will we continue to hurt ourselves more.
  • Use dental floss
We should use dental floss in the space between the molars if there is accumulated food.
  • Never take aspirin to relieve toothache
If we take aspirin, it will burn the gums, causing more pain.
  • Do not take antibiotics without a prescription.
Never take antibiotics that have not been prescribed by a dentist or doctor, because if we do not follow the instructions given by professionals, they can be harmful or have no effect.

How to prevent toothaches

  • Maintain proper daily oral hygiene
We should brush our teeth after every meal and use dental floss and mouthwash.
  • Maintain a healthy diet for your teeth
Avoid sugary foods and eat healthy products like fruits and vegetables, which help protect your teeth.
  • Go for regular dental checkups
We should visit the dentist at least twice a year to detect any problems in their early stages.
